Dry Ice – What is it?
Dry ice is the solid state of carbon dioxide which is formed at the temperature of -78.5 degrees Celsius. The process of solidifying carbon dioxide is known as deposition. The sublimation process when CO2 changes from solid to gas state also occurs at -78.5 degrees Celsius.
How is it formed?
Dry ice is made with reclaimed carbon dioxide. It may be a byproduct of other gases which is then used to make dry ice. The CO2 gas is filtered to get rid of other gases or impurities and is then pressurized and refrigerated for liquefaction at -78.5 Degrees Celsius. At the next stage, the pressure is reduced which causes some liquid carbon dioxide to vaporize. It also lowers the temperature further and the remaining carbon dioxide solidifies to form a snow-like substance called dry ice.
